L. Suzanne Suggs is an Assistant Professor of Social Marketing and Head of the BeCHANGE Research Group in the Institute for Public Communication, Faculty of Communication Sciences, at the Università della Svizzera italiana. She is also Director of the USI Sustainability Incubator (USI-SINC). She received her B.B.A. in Marketing at University of North Texas (USA), her MSc and PhD in Health Studies at Texas Woman’s University (USA), and a Post-doctoral fellowship at McMaster University (Canada).
Professor Suggs research focuses on social marketing and behavior change communication through information and communication technologies. She examines the determinants of behavior, tests behavior theory, and examine innovative digital communication strategies delivered through ICT and its influence on behaviors.
The majority of her work focuses on health related behaviors, primarily eating behavior and physical activity behavior, yet she works with a variety of health behavior and sustainability topics, including alcohol, tobacco, addiction, hygiene, decision-making, self-management of conditions and therapy, water and energy consumption, mobility, tourism behavior, and consumption. Her work is published in some of the leading health communication and e-health journals including the Journal of Medical Internet Research and The Journal of Health Communication.
She published a book chapter on e-health (with Dr. Scott Ratzan) and most recently a chapter on e-health services communication for the International Communication Association’s Encyclopedia of Communication on Digital Communication (forthcoming). She is frequently invited to keynote at conferences about the role of social marketing, m-health, e-health and social media on prevention of NCDs and in health promotion.
Prior to joining the faculty in Lugano, she was Assistant Professor of Health Communication, Department of Marketing Communication, at Emerson College and Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Public Health and Family Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine (Boston, Massachusetts, USA). She has a wealth of industry experience, working with and for pharmaceutical companies, health insurers, foundations, organizations, and multi-media communication companies when in her roles Associate Director of Research at HealthMedia (Michigan, USA), Research Assistant and Project Coordinator at the Oregon Center for Applied Science (Oregon, USA), and through her consultancy company Health-X-Change. She is a Co-Founder and on the Executive Board of the European Social Marketing Association, on the Steering Committee of the Geneva Health Forum (2014), and is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Health Communication. She teaches graduate level courses in Social Marketing, Focus Group Methods, Research methods, and Media Skills at USI, Basel and Bern, and in the MPH program in Zurich.
